A brief run-down of the Golden Globes 2012
Jan
Those who receive a Golden Globe are a good indicator of who will be holding another well-known gold statue later in the year. . . .
Ricky Gervais must have some loyal friends in high places but, despite some of the egocentric Hollywood elite finding distaste with his performance last year, he was asked to return again. . . .
Much of the same humour but, toned down and the most cutting gags were aimed at those not worthy of attendance (Kim Kardasian, Bieber).
The nouveau-silent film homage ‘The Artist’ came on top as the clear winner of the night – with 3 awards, including best picture (for a musical or comedy) and best actor (for a musical or comedy) for the charismatic performance Jean Dujardin.
The great Meryl Streep picked up an award for her portrayal of Maggie Thatcher in The Iron Lady – exposing some dodgy knowledge of British geography, that only the Americans’ do best, when she thanked ‘everyone in England who let me come over there and trample all over their history.’ (No miners in Wales then?!)
George Clooney scooped Best Actor for The Descendants– however personally I think the award should go to Michael Fassbender for the gripping McQueen film ‘Shame’.
But, as Gervais quipped: "The Globes are just like the Oscars but, without all that esteem’’. So it will be interesting to see if there will be any upsets come 26th February. . . I certainly hope so.
