We’ve all heard it before, that if you go to Hospital on a weekend you are more likely to come out worse then when you went in, that is if you come out at all!

Certainly as a Clinical Negligence Lawyer, I see far more delays in treatment occurring over the weekend, negligence claims arising from A and E departments and plenty of issues related to out of hours G.P services, so I am not surprised to see that the latest statistics confirm what we had all thought; standards of treatment at the weekend are far lower then during the week, (which lets face it is not always great at it’s best, hence the continually rising figures of successful clinical negligence claims) the statistics however take it a step further and focus on the increase in deaths over a weekend compared with during the week.

Overall 8.1% of those admitted on a weekend die, compared with 7.4% during the week.

Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients Association, shares my view and said she was "appalled" by the findings.

It is thought that the main reason for the finding are due to reduced service provision at the weekends. For example within the Greater London area, consultant surgeons worked only an average of four hours per day at weekends compared with 10 hours per day during the week.

Richard Hamblin from the Quality Care Commission, however argues that it is wrong to conclude that an increase in deaths over the weekend is due to poor care. He has yet to provide any supporting evidence to convince me otherwise!

University Hospital of North Staffordshire
George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust

Interestingly on the NHSLA factsheet for 2010-2011 the Isle Of Wight Hospital by far had the highest payout for clinical negligence claims compared to other Hospitals once the population had also been factored in, with over £1.5million paid out last year.

So, if you need treatment, think twice about having it done at the weekend, and check the table below first to see whether your local Hospital is an offender!
